Shannon Erisman, Ph.D.

Compassionate, evidence based therapy for individuals and couples

Therapy Approach

My individual psychotherapy approach is a combination of evidence-based strategies for managing mood and anxiety disorders, stress, and relationship issues with warmth, compassion, and humor. One of my specialty areas is in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a type of therapy that focuses on problems with emotional regulation. Another area of expertise is perinatal mental health, including perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD's).

My therapy approach is anti-racist and LGBTQIA+ affirming.

Perinatal Mental Health

The experience of pregnancy and postpartum can be an incredibly stressful time. Among the many aspects of the perinatal period that are not frequently discussed, assessed, or treated are anxiety and depression. These symptoms may manifest in ways that are surprising, and can include:

  • not feeling like yourself

  • not bonding with baby the way you wanted/expected

  • feeling anxious, keyed up, or on edge

  • having your mind play tricks on you

  • constantly checking on baby

  • compulsively googling or asking for reassurance

  • increased tension with partner or other children

  • having your own childhood (negative) memories resurface or bother you more

  • feeling overwhelmed or like you just can't do this anymore

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based therapy approach that combines elements of cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness and acceptance.

You may benefit from DBT if you:

  • find your emotions overwhelming

  • have trouble figuring out why you are upset, stressed, etc.

  • are stuck in conflictual cycles with important people in your life

  • struggle with ineffective coping, like shutting down, self-harm, substance use, or other impulsive behaviors

  • have a trauma history

  • find other styles of therapy frustrating or ineffective

  • enjoy yoga, meditation, mindfulness
